As the United States advances its AI Action Plan, a central theme is how open source and open-weight AI models can accelerate innovation, foster competition, and expand access while still ensuring security, accountability, and long-term sustainability. Yet the debate is not binary: successful innovation requires a spectrum of approaches, from fully open to strategically closed systems.
